Rosetta (spacecraft)

Rosetta was a space probe built by the European Space Agency launched on 2 March 2004. Along with Philae , its lander module, Rosetta performed a detailed study of comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko (67P). [8] [9] During its journey to the comet, the spacecraft flew by Mars and the asteroids 21 Lutetia and 2867 Šteins . [10] [11] [12] It was launched as the third cornerstone mission of the ESA's Horizon 2000 programme, after SOHO  / Cluster and XMM-Newton .

[6] [7] On 6 August 2014, the spacecraft reached the comet and performed a series of manoeuvres to be captured in its orbit . On 12 November, the lander module performed the first successful landing on a comet. [8] As of 2015 , the mission continues to return data from the spacecraft in orbit and from the lander in the comet's surface. During its journey to the comet, the spacecraft flew by Mars and the asteroids 21 Lutetia and 2867 Šteins . [9] [10] [11]

Rosetta is a robotic spacecraft of the European Space Agency on a mission to study the comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko . Rosetta consists of two main elements: the Rosetta space probe and the Philae lander . The spacecraft was launched on 2 March 2004 on an Ariane 5 rocket and will reach the comet by mid 2014. The space probe is intended to orbit and perform long-term exploration of the comet at close quarters. On 10 November 2014 the Philae lander will attempt to land and perform detailed investigations on the comet's surface. Both the probe and the lander carry a large complement of scientific experiments designed to complete the most detailed study of a comet ever attempted. [1]

Rosetta is a space probe financed by the European Space Agency . It was originally to have been launched on January 12 , 2003 to rendezvous with the comet 46 P/Wirtanen in 2011 . However this plan was abandoned after the Ariane 5 failure on December 11 , 2002 . A new plan is under consideration to target the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko with a launch in February, 2004 and rendezvous in 2014 .
